Quality Montessori programs build from the base, engaging children before the age of four to take advantage of the unique sensitivities and capacities of the young child. The integrity of the program depends on the majority of children having a full continuum of Montessori experience from age three or earlier. Occasionally in an established program, one or two older children without a Montessori background may be successfully integrated into a class.

Classes are structured to allow for a three-hour work cycle, so that children can engage in concentrated activity and work in a focused and uninterrupted manner.

The stability of the class is a major contributing factor to the success of any Montessori program. For this reason, Island Children's Montessori School requires that children be enrolled with the intent of completing a full cycle of the program, from three through six years of age. Parents are invited to apply for entrance for their child upon completing an individual interview at the school.

The Curriculum

Our Montessori curriculum is an enriched program that will give your child a solid academic foundation in preparation for his/her elementary years in international, private or public schools in Hong Kong or abroad. The areas of study are: practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, geography, botany, zoology, art and music.

Practical life activities teach practical skills while aiding eye-hand coordination and development of concentration, independence, confidence and organizational skills. Grace and courtesy skills are also practiced.

Sensorial materials help children develop the concepts of order, compare and classify so that future learning would be more meaningful and useful. These concepts prepare them for future exploration of language, mathematics, geometry, art, and music within the Montessori program.

Geography, Botany, Zoology, Art and Music are presented as extensions of sensorial and language activities, to enrich the child's knowledge of the world we live in.

Mathematics & language are core subjects introduced and practiced on a daily basis. They are the foundation for the child's academic growth.

Language flourishes best in a language-rich environment. Our curriculum consists of vocabulary enrichment, sound games, word study and reading analysis to build a strong language foundation for the child. The child learns to write in cursive as it is more natural for the child's hand to connect letters in words than writing in manuscript.

Mathematics materials in the early years lay the foundation for later cognitive development and prepare for the gradual transition to abstract thinking. Children work with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using concrete materials that will inspire their confidence and desire to seek out future learning experiences. These four mathematical operations and the concept of fractions are also explored further.
